Greenup Day 2003 Green up Day is a statewide celebration of environmental stewardship where citizens gather at central locations within their respective towns before disbursing to collect discarded rubbish. It was started in the mid-1970's as a way of keeping VT's roads and highways clean for tourists. It has since evolved into a well-embraced tradition aimed at both asthetics as well as controlling environmental contamination.
When the cubscouts saw that they could fit the entire troop in the Land Rover, they piled in one over the next! All Vermont boyscouts and cubscouts focus on Green up Day as their main spring public service event.
After picking up a bud can or candy wrapper here and there, new VTXS member, Tracey Hughes discovered the "mother load", an old abandoned dump adjacent to a flowing stream. VTXS had to break out the winches to get some of the larger items out of the ravine!
After the rubbish pick-up, the VTXS members headed out to Reading for some serious wheeling followed by some overnight trailside camping. After a very challenging day on the trail, laughs were heard 'til well into the night around the campfire. The following day, with brilliant sunshine, the expedition continued through the "wilds" of Reading, Plymouth and Bridgewater, culminating at the Long Trail Brewery, a great way to end a fantastic weekend of public service and tons of fun!
